Do you have to add water to a moist heat eye compress? It depends on the product. Bruder, Wizard Research, LumiDew and Beminda each publish a different instruction, and each one applies only to that maker's own product. This guide lines up what each maker says to do before, during and after a session, so you can see which routine you would realistically keep.

Do you add water? Four makers, four answers

  • Bruder Moist Heat Eye Compress: Bruder says you do not need to add water or wet the compress before use. Bruder Healthcare Company
  • Wizard Research Electric Heated Eye Mask (Model DEM525): for moist heat, Wizard Research says to lightly mist the included cotton cover with water before use, and not to soak the mask or its electrical components. Wizard Research
  • LumiDew Steam Eye Mask: LumiDew says to tear open the pouch so the mask self-heats on air exposure, then wear it. LumiDew
  • Beminda Steam Therapy Pro, current S-400R: Use still, unflavored bottled drinking water only. Do not add anything else.

The sections below cover how each product is heated or powered, how long its maker says to use it, what ends a session, and what care follows.

Bruder Moist Heat Eye Compress: no water added, heated on a plate

Bruder states that the MediBeads inside its Moist Heat Eye Compress continuously absorb water molecules from the air. Bruder Healthcare Company Bruder says this means users do not need to add water or wet the compress before use. Bruder describes the beads as silver-infused.

Heating happens in the microwave. Bruder states the compress is only designed to be heated in a microwave on a medium setting. Bruder specifies a clean microwave-safe dinner plate, not a paper plate and not the bare microwave glass tray.

Bruder's heating and application steps are:

  1. Microwave the compress for 20 seconds.
  2. If you want more heat, add 5-second increments, up to a maximum heating time of 30 seconds.
  3. Touch test the compress before placing it over your eyes.
  4. If it feels too hot, remove it immediately and wait 1 to 2 minutes. Bruder Healthcare Company
  5. Remove contact lenses before applying it.
  6. Place the solid white side over closed eyelids for the recommended 8 to 10 minutes.

Bruder's FAQ gives this application time both as 8 to 10 minutes and as 10 minutes.

Wizard Research DEM525: optional moisture, continuous USB power

The Wizard Research Electric Heated Eye Mask, Model DEM525, is USB-powered with no internal battery. It requires a continuous connection to a compatible 5V/2A (10W) USB power source during use. Wizard Research Wizard Research gives a wall adapter or a power bank as examples of a suitable power source. Wizard Research

Wizard Research specifies 10 adjustable heat levels, from approximately 99°F to 117°F (approximately 37°C to 47°C). Its adjustable timer supports sessions of up to 30 minutes, with automatic shut-off at the end of the selected session. Wizard Research lists a recommended session duration of 10 minutes.

For moist heat, Wizard Research says to lightly mist the included removable, washable cotton cover with water before use. Wizard Research presents this as an option for when moist heat is preferred. It warns not to soak the mask or its electrical components.

LumiDew Steam Eye Mask: open the pouch and wear it

LumiDew states that each box contains 30 individually wrapped, single-use steam masks with soft ear loops. LumiDew

LumiDew's instructions are:

  1. Tear open the pouch so the mask self-heats on air exposure, without a microwave or electricity.
  2. Hook the loops over your ears.
  3. Wear the mask for 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Toss the single-use mask after use.

On its US product page, LumiDew lists the materials inside the mask as iron powder, activated carbon, purified water, minerals and non-woven cotton. Lumidew The same US product page describes the mask as unscented, with no dyes or latex.

Beminda Steam Therapy Pro S-400R: a reservoir you fill, a session that switches off

Beminda Steam Therapy Pro is a rechargeable, hands-free steam eye mask. The current S-400R is a one-button mask.

The reservoir instruction for the current S-400R is two sentences long. Use still, unflavored bottled drinking water only. Do not add anything else.

The current model has three 12-minute modes: continuous warm mist, interval warm mist and cool mist. Each mode lasts 12 minutes, and the warm modes include approximately four minutes of warm-up. That warm-up counts inside the 12 minutes, not on top of them.

The current S-400R manual adds detail about the session itself. Mist can appear during the warm-up. No signal marks the end of the warm-up. Keep your eyes closed during the session. The mask switches off at the end of the session. Beminda

Who decides when the session ends

Each maker sets the length of a session in a different way.

  • Bruder recommends an 8 to 10 minute application, which its FAQ also states as 10 minutes.
  • Wizard Research's DEM525 timer runs up to 30 minutes and shuts off automatically at the end of the selected session.
  • LumiDew says to wear its mask for 15 to 20 minutes, then toss it.
  • Each Beminda S-400R mode lasts 12 minutes, with warm-up included. The S-400R switches off at the end of the session.

If you like choosing your own session length, the Wizard Research adjustable timer leaves that choice to you. If you would rather not choose, the Beminda modes run for a fixed 12 minutes.

After the session: reheating, washing, drying or discarding

Bruder

Bruder recommends waiting at least 30 minutes before reheating the compress and reducing the heating time by half. Bruder Healthcare Company Bruder's FAQ words the shorter reheat in two ways. One version says to reduce the heating time by half, or to 10 seconds if the compress is used within 30 minutes of initial heating. Another says to reduce the microwave heating time by half if the compress is reused within 30 minutes or reheated. Bruder Healthcare Company Because these wordings differ, check the instructions that come with your compress before reheating it.

Bruder states the compress does not need to be washed after every use. If it is soiled or exposed to makeup, oils, grease or food, Bruder says to wait 2 hours after use, hand wash it only in cold water with a mild detergent, and air dry it for at least 24 hours before use.

Bruder offers optional single-use Hygienic Eyelid Sheets and recommends them to reduce how often the compress needs washing, because frequent washing can cause fabric pilling.

Wizard Research

Wizard Research instructs users to let the mask cool after use before storing it. Wizard Research The cotton cover is removable and washable.

LumiDew

LumiDew says to toss the single-use mask after use. LumiDew

Beminda S-400R

Empty, clean and dry the mask after each use. The current S-400R manual covers filling and emptying the tank, and cleaning and drying that is safe for the electrical body. Do not submerge or rinse the electrical body. Beminda Follow the current manual for the exact cleaning and drying steps.

Which preparation routine fits your day

These instructions describe different routines, not better or worse ones. Here is how they line up with different preferences.

  • If you would rather add no water and have a microwave nearby, Bruder's routine is microwave heating with no added water.
  • If you want to pick a heat level and a session length and can stay connected to USB power, Wizard Research's DEM525 offers 10 heat levels and a timer of up to 30 minutes.
  • If you want a mask you open, wear and toss, LumiDew's single-use steam mask follows those steps.
  • If you prefer fixed 12-minute modes, the Beminda Steam Therapy Pro S-400R works that way. The mask switches off at the end of the session. Its routine is to fill the reservoir with still, unflavored bottled drinking water and to empty, clean and dry the mask after each use.
